Young Panamanian Builds His Own Hot Tub!

| NY City Businessman Builds Spa In Puerto Rico!
These next photos are among some of my personal favorites. This hot tub was built by a New York City businessman putting in the finishing amenities to his retirement home in Puerto Rico.
I had a contractor build the roof, (we call it a gazebo roof), but the spa was entirely built by my nephew and me. We glued PVC pipes together before, but neither one of us had ever done anything with concrete blocks.
At first we were a bit intimidated by this project but once we got started all we had to do was follow the instructions in Genes' book and some common sense. We only worked on Saturdays and Sundays so it took a few weeks to complete it. It is 6' by 8' spa with 16 jets (rotators & pulse) and two lights. When I began this project, I had no idea what I was getting into. I was advised to go with a fiberglass pre-built unit and was leaning that way when I found Gene's book on the internet. My goal was to have a custom built spa with a waterfall and adjoining shower.
I wanted it to be powerful, esthetic and fit the custom built home it is a part of. Even though this project was a struggle at times, I can state without reservation that no matter what problem I encountered, Gene was with me every step of the way.
His unconditional support was a big part of what makes my "renewal room" the most beautiful and revitalizing spa I have ever been in and I've been in spas all over the world. |

Gene has been wonderful to work with during my entire hot tub project. I'm happy to say after seven hard months of work I finally completed the inside of my 10 by 16 timberframe hot tub room. I had never built a homemade spa of any kind before, and living in a Northern climate, I knew I couldn't afford to make to many mistakes. Gene, Thank you for the compliments. We searched the Internet for do-it-yourself plans to build a hot-tub. I was very excited to find your web site, which used concrete block as a base material. Since, I am a bricklayer, it was easy for me to install the base of the project.
The work was done by myself, my wife and my son. We followed your directions and also covered the entire base with 1" x 1" ceramic tiles. The surround walls of the spa are a concrete board base covered with Imperial plaster base coat and finished in Venician Plaster. The glass block panels are separated by 2 mirrors which add plenty of depth to the room. The built-in plant enclosure adds color to the room.
We also installed a television enclosure opposite the plant enclosure. Although, I could not keep track of the hours it took me to finish the project, I know it will be enjoyed Thank you for all of your help!
