Over the 18 plus years I’ve been in business teaching and helping customers build their own hot tubs and spa projects, I have accumulated quite a number of testimonials and comments from my hot tub customers along with pictures of projects these hot tub customers have gone on to build. They have built spas and hot tubs as well as swim spas, plunge pools, cocktail pools and exercise pools.
Many of these hot tub customers had little or no previous experience in the different aspects evolved in doing a project and very little basic DIY skills needed to build the project they were about to undertake. However, having someone a phone call away or email away to help them out if they got stuck on something made all the difference in the success of the project they envisioned and their decision to go ahead and undertake such a project.
Many hot tub customers realized that after getting started, their fears about whether they could do a project like this disappeared. Like with anything you undertake for the first time, looking at the whole picture may be a little daunting. But, looking at the whole picture as a series of much simpler step by step processes, greatly reduces any fears and hesitations.
I tell my customers all the time, “the only difference between you and the experts who do this type work is the time it takes you to get the job done”. Take your time, plan and think through each step and you’ll find you can do the same job an expert would do, just a little slower. And because these projects are not about speed, there is no pressure or reason to hurry just to get things done.
I have to admit, I’ve had many customer’s complete projects that would exceed even what I would be willing to attempt to do myself. Some of these customers never realized what they were capable of doing until they fully engaged themselves in their own projects. Did any of these customers make mistakes on their projects? Sure they did, but most were minimal in nature and easily corrected because all they had to do is pick up the phone and call me for help or advice. The way it seemed to always work out was that the guys who weren’t afraid to pick up the phone and ask questions, had the least number of issues to deal with. The guys that thought they knew what they were doing or tried to re-invent the wheel a little because they had better ideas on how to do things, were the ones that got themselves in trouble.
What I always tell my hot tub customers is that when you ask me a question, it helps me out just as much as it does me answering the question for you. How… it tells me that some part of the information in my book(s) needed more explanation or clarity so I would make notes, and include more info in future revisions of my DIY books. So by asking me questions they were actually helping future customers of mine. When they understood that, they no longer hesitated to call me for any help they needed.

I am a dentist by trade and have had virtually no construction experience, so when my wife started suggesting that we build our own hot tub, I just laughed at her.
