I have no doubt that most people have seen or maybe even the had the opportunity to relax in a spa or hot tub at one time or another. It’s a great experience and the first thing that came to your mind was probably, “boy I would love to have one of these”. And then reality sets in, a quality spa or manufacture built hot tub is expensive! You may not feel comfortable spending 7 to 10 thousand dollars on a new custom built spa or hot tub, some are even higher priced than that. I totally understood this, but that’s the price range that a decent quality hot tub will likely be in.
And let me say this, don’t waste your money on a spa or hot tub from one of the big box stores that might be selling hot tubs for 3 for 4 thousand dollars. All I’ll say is you’ll get what you pay for, and it won’t be much. How about those cheap blow-up soft side tubs, are you kidding me! Who wants a mini vinyl cool pool on their deck or patio with no jets etc.…, save your money for the real deal my friends.
First, let’s define what a custom built hot tub really is. If you go to any spa or hot tub dealer you’re going to get a sales pitch like, “we can customize a hot tub just for you”, (it’s how they define custom). Translation, the tub is same but they can add or take away some of the amenities. My response, big deal it’s still going to be the same shallow fiberglass or acrylic/fiberglass bowl with no real footwell room and uncomfortable seating arrangements. (I’m sure I’ll get some flak for that statement), but, you know what, it’s the truth.

Why a Custom Built Spa
Let’s see if I’m reading your mind right at this moment. You’re thinking, OMG how much more is something like that going to cost me, right? That’s what I would be thinking. But here’s the reality, the cost can actually be less than the average cost of medium grade spa or hot tub. Higher end hot tubs can go for as much as 8-12 thousand dollars. I know for a fact I can save you as much as 80% or more on that cost! How, by showing you how to build it yourself. Plus, permanently installed hot tubs hold their value and can even add to the equity value of your home, portables do neither of this.
Now, I’m not so naive as to believe that everyone I contact or is reading this article is going to be willing or be able to build their own custom built spa or hot tub. But, enough of you have been willing to do this, which has kept me in business for over 16 years now, so wouldn’t you say I must be doing something right. Yes, I do cater to the DIYer, those are the people I best relate to because I’ve been a huge DIYer all my life. I love doing my own projects and I love learning how to do new projects. But most of all, I love teaching and showing others how to a project they may not have consider before, or maybe were a little intimidated by.

Yes, some of these projects look a little intimidating but that’s only because some of these customers have more experience than other customers do. Plus, you get me as your personal spa and hot tub building “coach” all through your project until it’s done. Try to find anyone else in this business that does this! I know for some of you it’s still going to be about the money. I get that, but let me throw something out to you. You may or may not have heard of a “plunge pool”. A plunge pool is simply constructed water vessel that you can sit in to relax and cool off, (or warm up). They can be the size of a custom hot tub like I outline in my information package, or they can be smaller and they can even be larger, totally customized just the way you want it.
Now here’s something nobody else will tell you. A hot tub and/or plunge pool can be the same type of water vessel, you can outfit a plunge pool just like it was going to be a hot tub, (not expensive at all), then convert it to a hot tub a later date when you have the finances to do so. What I mean by that is you can put in all the fittings and plumbing for the jets etc., and tie them in later. You will need to put in the filter system, but you can leave out the jet pumps, heater, blower, lights etc… and put all that equipment in a later time. So you basically construct a “dual purpose” unit.
